PCB cleanup is ongoing; public hearings scheduled this week

PCB map

This map from Solutia shows, in the yellow highlighted portion, where PCB cleanup efforts are now focused.

After dangerous levels of PCBs were discovered from west Anniston and further into the county in the late 1990s, a cleanup plan was put into action. The most concerning concentrations of PCBs — that which was found in soil in residential areas — were taken care of by 2004 through emergency cleanup actions.

The rest continues to be a work in progress, with Snow Creek slated for cleanup as soon as next year. Choccolocco Creek needs attention next, but it’s still early: An EPA public hearing where area residents and other concerned individuals can voice their concerns on the issue will be held at Oxford Civic Center Tuesday at 6 p.m.
